Build a clear spice brief for food service, manufacturing or distribution. Identify the spice, whole or ground format, intended use and acceptance criteria before assessing a proposed product.
Existing Trade reference image of assorted spices. It illustrates the product family; it is not a proposed lot, an origin certificate or confirmation that every item shown is offered.
What to specify before requesting a quote
Black pepper
Specify whole peppercorns or a ground format. For whole pepper, request the required size or density basis and acceptable extraneous matter; for ground pepper, define particle size and any treatment requirement. Confirm the proposed origin and lot evidence separately.
Cloves
State whole cloves or ground format, intended use and acceptable stem or broken-material content. Define the appearance and aroma criteria for sample assessment, and request current specification and relevant lot test results.
Ceylon cinnamon
Request confirmation of botanical identity and origin for Ceylon cinnamon rather than accepting a generic cinnamon description. Specify quills, cut pieces or powder, with dimensions or particle size as applicable, and define the evidence needed for your destination.
Your enquiry checklist
Include these details in the notes field of the enquiry form:
Spice name, botanical identity where relevant, required origin and whether alternatives may be proposed.
Whole, cut or ground format; size, density or particle-size basis and acceptable foreign matter, stems or broken material as applicable.
Intended application, processing conditions and any required treatment, with the supporting documentation.
Quality limits and agreed analytical methods; request a current specification, relevant lot COA, microbiological and contaminant evidence appropriate to the product and destination.
Read the approved bilingual introduction to sourcing enquiries and document review. This is a general Trade guide, not a spice technical data sheet, lot COA or product certification.
Reference information for preparing an enquiry. Product specification, suitability, origin, packing and commercial terms require written confirmation for the proposed supply. Published guides do not replace a current technical data sheet or lot-specific certificate of analysis.
Before you approve a product
Are whole and ground formats interchangeable?
Define the format around your recipe, equipment and handling process. Agree the required particle size and evaluate a sample in your application; do not assume an automatic substitution.
Does a photograph establish origin or product quality?
Use an image as a visual reference. Check the proposed product identity, origin documents, current specification and relevant lot results before approval.
What should a spice document cover?
Check the actual product, manufacturer or processor, lot, test method and document date. A general company introduction is not a spice specification, treatment certificate or shipment analysis.
